A village that became part of the city
Cherry Hinton grew up as a separate village at the foot of the chalk south-east of Cambridge, and it now sits inside the city boundary. For a rooflight installation in Cherry Hinton, that single fact decides who you deal with and which rulebook applies.
Book a light surveyBecause the ward is part of Cambridge rather than South Cambridgeshire, any planning question goes to Greater Cambridge Shared Planning acting for Cambridge City Council. The shared service also handles South Cambridgeshire, so the forms and the website look the same either way, but the policies, the conservation areas and the officers' local knowledge belong to the city. A house on the Fulbourn side of the boundary and a house a short walk away in Cherry Hinton can get different answers to the same question.
The place still reads as two layers. There is an older core, with the medieval church of St Andrew, a winding High Street and a scattering of cottages and earlier houses, and around it a much larger ring of twentieth century streets built as Cambridge spread east along Cherry Hinton Road, Coldham's Lane and Fulbourn Road. Those later streets hold the bulk of the housing, and they are where the bulk of skylight questions come from: loft rooms in semis, kitchen extensions, dark landings and bungalows with a gloomy middle.
What ties the two layers together is the sky. East of the city the land is open, the Gog Magog Hills to the south are low and rounded, and there is little high ground close enough to cut off the low winter sun. A roof slope here sees nearly the whole sky, which is good for daylight and a reason to think hard about summer heat. Our skylight and rooflight installation service for Cambridge and the villages around it starts every Cherry Hinton job by working out which of those two things matters more in your room.
