Our aim for this website
We want everyone who is planning a rooflight or skylight to be able to read this website, use it and contact us, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use.
This accessibility statement covers visionskylightscambridge.co.uk. Vision Skylights installs and replaces rooflights and skylights across Cambridge and roughly 30 miles around, and the site is where we explain that work: from roof windows and sun tunnels to how we plan the light in a room before a roof is cut. If part of the site gets in your way, we would like to hear about it.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 at level AA. These guidelines are the widely used international standard for making web content usable by people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive impairments, and they sit behind the duty in the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people.
What we have done
The site is designed to be read in several ways, not only by looking at the screen.
- Pages use a clear heading structure, so screen reader users can move from section to section.
- Text and background colours are chosen and checked for contrast, including text placed over photographs.
- Images carry text alternatives, and diagrams such as the sun path and roof sections are explained in the surrounding text.
- Links say where they go, and you can move through menus, links and buttons with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline.
- Layouts reflow on a phone without sideways scrolling, and tables are kept small enough to fit a narrow screen.
- Text can be enlarged to 200% in your browser without content being lost.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, page animations are kept to a minimum.
We write in plain English and explain trade terms such as upstand, kerb and solar control glass where they first matter, because clear writing helps everyone, not only people using assistive technology. Our guides and answers follow the same approach.
Known limitations
Some parts of the site come from other services, and we have less control over how accessible they are.
| Part of the site | The limitation | Another way |
|---|---|---|
| Enquiry form | Loads from a third-party provider in a frame, so its labels, errors and focus order are set by that provider | Email us |
| Area page maps | Map tiles are images and cannot be read by a screen reader | The places we cover are listed in text |
| WhatsApp button | Opens WhatsApp, which has its own accessibility settings | Email us |
The enquiry form is the one we would most like you to be able to use, because it is the quickest way to book a light survey. If it does not work well with your screen reader, voice control or keyboard, please email info@visionskylightscambridge.co.uk with the same details: your town, the room, and what you are hoping to do. We will treat an email exactly as we treat a form enquiry.
The maps on our areas we cover pages are there to help sighted visitors place a town. Everything the map shows is also given on the page in text, so you lose nothing by skipping it.
Photographs are there to show the kind of light a rooflight gives. Where a photograph is decorative, it is hidden from screen readers so it does not add noise.
Asking for another format
If you need information from this website, or from a quote or light plan, in a different format, ask us and we will do our best to provide it.
That could mean a large print copy, a plain text version of a written quote, a light plan described in words rather than drawn, or a longer conversation during the survey so we can talk you through where the light will land. Tell us what works for you when you get in touch. We will reply by email and agree the format and a reasonable timescale with you.
Reporting a problem
If you find something on the site hard to use, or think we are not meeting the WCAG 2.1 AA aim, please tell us so we can put it right.
Email info@visionskylightscambridge.co.uk and include, if you can:
- the web address of the page, or a description of where you were;
- what you were trying to do;
- the device, browser and any assistive technology you were using.
We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within 5 working days and to tell you what we plan to do about it. If we cannot fix the problem straight away, we will help you get the information or service another way in the meantime.
If you are not happy with how we respond, you can raise it through our complaints procedure. You can also contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS), which gives free advice on equality and discrimination matters.
Reviewing this statement
This statement reflects the site as it stands and will be updated when the website changes.
We check new pages and templates for accessibility as they are added, and we will review this statement at least once a year, or sooner if we add a new third-party tool. You can also read how we work, our 10-year workmanship guarantee, or go back to the homepage.
